This four-patch block is named after Henry Clay, a prominent 19th-century American politician. Built from half-square triangles and squares, it's arranged into four matching quadrants that come together to form a star-and-pinwheel effect, deceptively complex-looking for how simple the individual pieces actually are. It carries several related names, including Clay's Star, Clay's Favorite, Harry's Star, and, later, Star of the West.
