About this block

This is a nine-patch design built from half-square triangles and flying geese units, one of the more piece-heavy blocks in this style of quilting, since it combines two of the trickier basic patchwork units rather than relying on just one. It appears in Jennifer Chiaverini's historical novel The New Year's Quilt, part of her Elm Creek Quilts series, where a character uses the block as a place to embroider personal reflections before making resolutions. It belongs to a small family of related "mother"-themed blocks, alongside Mother's Choice and Mother's Own, each built differently but sharing the same naming tradition.
