Techniques used (complete these first)

Strip Piecing

Strip Set Unit

Sewing long strips of fabric together before sub-cutting them into smaller units. This increases speed and alignment accuracy.

  1. Cut long strips of fabric to the calculated width.
  2. Align strips right sides together and sew along the entire length.
  3. Press the seams (usually toward the darker fabric).
  4. Use a rotary cutter and ruler to sub-cut the strip set into units at the required intervals.

Pro tip: Check your seam allowance after the first few inches to ensure the total width of the strip set is exactly what the pattern calls for. For strip sets with multiple seams, alternate your sewing direction for each seam to keep the strips aligned and prevent the fabric from warping or leaning. Sub-cut to the unfinished unit size listed in your cutting instructions.

Kaleidoscope Wedge Piecing

Kaleidoscope Wedge Unit

Build mirrored wedge pairs first, then join those pairs around the center so points stay aligned and seam bulk is controlled.

  1. Group pieces into mirrored wedge pairs and sew each pair with a consistent 1/4 inch seam.
  2. Press paired seams in opposite directions across neighboring pairs so intersections nest when joined.
  3. Join paired wedges into larger sections, matching inner points first and then outer edges.
  4. Sew sections together around the center in sequence, checking that center points meet before stitching past the pivot.
  5. Trim the completed unit to unfinished size only after all wedge seams are sewn and pressed flat.

Pro tip: Set a short stitch length near the center point and pin from the center outward; this reduces point drift and avoids a pinwheel-like twist at the hub.

Stitch and Flip (Snowballing)

Stitch-and-Flip Corner Unit

A method to add diagonal corners to a square or rectangle without cutting triangles first.

  1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the smaller corner square.
  2. Place the small square on the corner of the base fabric, right sides together.
  3. Sew directly on the marked diagonal line.
  4. Trim the excess fabric 1/4 inch away from the seam.
  5. Flip the triangle open and press.

Pro tip: Sew a needle-width to the 'outside' of the line (toward the corner) to account for the thickness of the fabric when it folds over.
