About this block

This is an uneven nine-patch, built from squares, rectangles, and half-square triangle units, with setting triangles worked into the corners, the trickiest part to piece cleanly. It was named by the Ladies' Art Company around 1890. More recently, the block has taken on new life in commemorative projects: a well-documented block-of-the-month quilt titled "Votes for Women" used Grandmother's Choice as its foundation pattern to mark the 2020 centennial of women's suffrage in the United States.
