Rocky Mountain Puzzle

About this block

This block is built from half-square triangles and plain squares, pulled together with a bit of partial-seam piecing around a framed center square. Quilt columnist Nancy Cabot wrote about it in her Chicago Tribune column on June 22, 1933, explaining that it originally went by the name "Mountain Puzzle" when it was designed in the hills of Kentucky, and was also known as "Ozark Mountains" in Missouri, before eventually settling into the name Rocky Mountain Puzzle once it took hold in that region. Cabot's column, like many syndicated newspaper quilt patterns of the era, sold copies of the pattern by mail for a few cents.
