Roman Stripe

About this block

This block is a half-square triangle unit where one triangle is a single solid piece and the other is subdivided into narrow, parallel stripes of scrap fabric, a construction some quilters call a striped or "string-pieced" HST. Historian and quilter Julie Stocker notes there's no strict, agreed-upon definition of a Roman Stripe: the same block has been published under different names in different regions, and the same name has been applied to related but not identical constructions, including full blocks built entirely from parallel strips (sometimes distinguished as Rail Fence) rather than this half-solid, half-striped triangle version.
