Tube Strip Piecing (Diagonal Sets)
Strip Set Unit
Sew strips into a tube, then sub-cut on a diagonal angle to create mirrored strip-based units quickly and consistently.
- Cut the strip set fabrics to matching width and length.
- Sew the strips together in sequence, then join the first and last strip to form a tube.
- Press seams flat and align the tube on your cutting mat.
- Use a ruler set to the required diagonal angle and sub-cut units from the tube at the needed unfinished size.
- Open each cut unit, align orientation to the block map, and press before final assembly.
Pro tip: Starch the strip set before closing the tube and cutting; diagonal sub-cuts expose bias edges, so a firm press keeps units from stretching out of shape.
Strip Piecing
Strip Set Unit
Sewing long strips of fabric together before sub-cutting them into smaller units. This increases speed and alignment accuracy.
- Cut long strips of fabric to the calculated width.
- Align strips right sides together and sew along the entire length.
- Press the seams (usually toward the darker fabric).
- Use a rotary cutter and ruler to sub-cut the strip set into units at the required intervals.
Pro tip: Check your seam allowance after the first few inches to ensure the total width of the strip set is exactly what the pattern calls for. For strip sets with multiple seams, alternate your sewing direction for each seam to keep the strips aligned and prevent the fabric from warping or leaning. Sub-cut to the unfinished unit size listed in your cutting instructions.
