Triangle in a Square

About this block

This is a foundational unit rather than a standalone block: a single triangle set inside a square, most often built from three or four pieces joined at angled seams. It's also known as "Peaky and Spike," a nickname for the pointed center triangle and the smaller flanking pieces. Because those angled seams have a reputation for being fussy to sew accurately, the unit picked up its "V Block" nickname from a specialty ruler, the V Block Ruler by Studio 180 Design, designed specifically to trim the unit down to a precise, square finish without struggling with the bias edges. Like Corner Beam and Flying Geese, this is a building-block unit rather than a design in its own right, showing up as a component inside larger, more elaborate blocks, most notably the star points in 54-40 or Fight, the block we researched together on our first night.
