I had been putting off adding templates to the radial quilt layout because it seemed like a massive, difficult amount of work. But I am sponsoring the White Elephant Quilt Swap in just a couple of weeks, and one of the things I really wanted to do for it was provide mini quilts in various layouts. I don't want to provide quilts that are design only. I want people to actually be able to make the physical quilt.
With standard blocks, that's pretty easy because I give cutting instruction and yardage. Even if I don't give the exact directions, most blocks are traditional with known construction methods. For radial quilts, they're pretty much exclusively either templates or foundation paper piecing, so leaving them without templates really wasn't an option. I needed to figure out how to template those blocks.
So on Saturday, I sat down and tackled the templates for radial layouts. I had already done enough work on templates in other parts of the site that it wasn't nearly as difficult as I expected. Some of the framework was already there. It was still a huge chunk of work, but radial is no longer just a "labs" layout for images. We can actually make them into real quilts now, and I'm really proud to have this functionality in the site in time for the swap.
